유럽 MTV EMA 블랙핑크 리사 2관왕, BTS 지민, 르세라핌 수상 영예
It’s time for the latest K-entertainment news with Walter Lee.
Starting off with big news from the 2024 MTV Europe Music Awards.
It seems to also be the year of the big band members going solo. The 2024 MTV EMAs was held in Manchester, UK on November 10th local time, and K-pop stars definitely made their impression at the awards show. BlackPink’s Lisa won the ‘Best Collaboration’ with a track titled ‘New Woman’ with pop star Rosalia, released in August, and Lisa also walked away with the ‘Biggest Fans’ awards.
BTS member Jimin was chosen as the winner in the ‘Best K-pop’ category which makes the second consecutive year a BTS member has taken home the prized trophy after Jungkook’s win last year.
Girl group LE SSERAFIM won in the ‘Best Push’ category, an award given to the best performance among those artists featured in MTV’s artist introduction program, the ‘MTV Push Campaign,’ over the past year.
I think I can recall the nominations we talked about before, and it looks like all the ones we mentioned have turned out with winning those awards! Congratulations to all the winners!
Moving onto a boy group being recognised in LA!
K-pop boy group SEVENTEEN have received a plaque of appreciation from the Los Angeles City Council, with LA-born member Joshua receiving the award on behalf of the group at LA City Hall on November 8th, local time.
Sounds like a fancy award. What is this award and why did the group receive it?
This award is given to organisations and individuals who contribute to arts, culture, and the community. SEVENTEEN have been praised by the city through their performances as well as the City project to promote LA. One member of the LA City Council praised the group by saying, “SEVENTEEN is an amazing K-pop group that has captivated the world. Beyond delivering great music, they have built a cultural bridge connecting fans globally”.
On the 7th, the group marked the start of ‘SEVENTEEN The City LA’ which highlights the expanding influence that the K-pop group has in North America. This event was held over the weekend and was also the start of SEVENTEEN’s ‘Follow’ World Tour in the US, starting off in Los Angeles’ BMO Stadium. This will be the group’s first-ever performance in a U.S. stadium.
Great achievement, that again demonstrates SEVENTEEN’S immense popularity in the U.S.
Moving onto an update of a story we covered the last time you were here Walter, and it’s about G-Dragon.
Yes, we talked about G-Dragon’s comeback song ‘Power’ a couple of weeks ago and during my one-week hiatus the song just seems to keep getting bigger and bigger.
‘Power’ debuted at number 23 on the UK Official Singles Sales and Downloads on the 8th local time. As of November 1, the song ranked number one on the iTunes charts in 15 countries and regions and the superstar’s music video also surpassed 10 million views in just one day after its release. The release of ‘Power’ sees the arguable King of K-pop’s return after 7 years and 4 months, showing that being out of the spotlight means nothing when your name is G-Dragon.
Those were some “powerful” achievements from the K-pop world today.
Thanks for that Walter.
