US President Donald Trump’s bid to acquire Greenland could be foiled by Britain under a pact signed over a century ago, a former diplomat told The Times. Trump has expressed an interest in making the Arctic Island, an autonomous territory of Denmark, part of the US. He has not ruled out using military or economic power to persuade Denmark to hand it over.
However, experts say that if Denmark were to sell Greenland it would have to give Britain first refusal under a deal signed in 1917. Tom Hoyem, a former Danish official and an expert on the history of Greenland, said that the 1917 agreement was still valid.
The agreement was crafted when US President Woodrow Wilson purchased the US Virgin Islands from Denmark for $25 million.
